Dental Bite Guards
Dental bite guards provide Colorado Springs and Pueblo patients with an effective way to prevent trauma and advanced wear to the teeth as a result of contact injury during sports, Bruxism (teeth grinding), malocclusions (bad bites) or temporomandibular joint (TMJ and TMD) disorders. All of these factors can cause the teeth to become damaged or to sustain premature wear-and-tear, potentially leading to graver and more expensive consequences further down the line.
You Should Have a Dental Bite Guard Fitted If…
- You struggle with TMD – a TMJ bite guard will help to alleviate the stress this puts on the teeth and jaw, thus protecting them against long-term damage.
- You have a mal-occluding bite or poorly orientated teeth. If you aren’t already undergoing orthodontic treatment for these, a dental bite guard could help protect your teeth against the uneven wear-and-tear they tend to cause.
You should have a bite guard if you play any contact sports (for example, football, basketball and hockey) or there is a risk of you receiving physical trauma to the face. At Prestige Dental we want you to support you in your athletic endeavors while also protecting your smile. During the 2016-2017 school year, we are doing free custom bite guards! Bite Guards and Mouth Guards: How Do I Get One Fitted?
Very simply! The next time you come in for a check-up, ask your dentist whether they would recommend that you wear a bite guard. If they do, they will take a mold of your teeth and send it off to the dental laboratory to have one made for you. This typically doesn’t take more than a day or two, so you should be able to return to our offices shortly and collect your new bite guard. Be sure to explain the reasons you wish to have a bite guard fitted. Those fabricated for sports obviously need to be bulkier and more protective than those made for nighttime teeth grinding.
