The alignment of our teeth can change over time. Thanks to advances in modern dentistry and orthodontics, we have treatment options such as braces and clear aligners. These dental technologies give us the opportunity to have the straight, beautiful smiles we want.

What is a clear aligner?

Clear aligners, such as Invisalign® or ClearCorrect, can be an effective alternative to traditional metal braces.

The Invisalign® system uses customized aligners that are made from a discreet, clear material. The aligners are removable so you can take them out when you are eating, brushing, and flossing. For the best results, you should wear your aligners for 20-22 hours each day.

Clear aligners are designed with precision in mind. This method of teeth alignment includes the use of multiple sets of aligners. Each set is created to encourage a slight, purposeful shift in the placement of your teeth. As you move on through your sets of aligners, your teeth will slowly make the exact movements needed as identified during the planning of your treatment. The end result is a straight and stunning smile.

Why might my dentist or orthodontist recommend the use of clear aligners such as Invisalign® or ClearCorrect?

Not everyone needs help with tooth alignment, but some of us do. During your regular dental exam, your dentist may notice imperfect positioning of your teeth when your jaws are closed. This is called malocclusion. Depending on the severity of tooth alignment concerns, your dentist might refer you to an orthodontist for a consultation.

An orthodontist may recommend clear aligners to you for a variety of reasons, including:

  • Crooked teeth
  • Overbite—when your upper jaw protrudes further than your lower jaw
  • Underbite—when your lower jaw protrudes further than your upper jaw

Some notable benefits of clear aligners such as Invisalign® & ClearConnect are:

  • Shorter treatment time than traditional metal braces
  • Flexibility for your lifestyle since they can be removed during activities such as eating
  • Discreet design using clear materials that make them virtually invisible

How do clear aligners work?

Clear aligners work similarly to braces since they straighten teeth over time by putting a light yet constant pressure on your teeth. This pressure helps to gradually shift teeth and training them to remain in the desired place.

Do clear aligners require special care?

Yes. Just like your teeth, it’s important to brush and thoroughly clean your aligners daily.

How long is treatment with clear aligners?

Your teeth’s condition and the treatment plan recommended by your orthodontist will determine how long you need to use clear aligners. When estimating the length of your treatment, the orthodontist will consider a variety of factors such as how far your teeth need to move in order to be properly aligned. Each person’s situation is unique and your treatment plan will be tailored to fit your needs.
