Dentures at Prestige Dental Centers - smiling seniors @ Prestige DEntal Centers

Dentures have long offered people in need of new teeth an economical teeth replacement solution. Dentures are removable appliances that are custom made from molds of a patient’s gums and remaining teeth, if any are left. They are fabricated in our on-site laboratory to closely resemble a partial or full set of natural teeth, depending on how many need replacing.

Dentures are generally used to replace multiple adjacent missing teeth. Partials are recommended for patients who still have some of their natural teeth remaining, while full removable dentures can be used for patients who have lost all of their original adult teeth, or whose remaining teeth are failing.

Denture Alternatives

Not all dentures are removable. Dr. Rogers and Dr. Bull generally recommend that patients opt for snap on teeth, which are secured firmly in place using dental implants. They are then removed after meals and at nighttime for cleaning. Even better is the All on 4 dental implant technique, which can provide edentulous patients with a full set of non-removable teeth in as little as a single day!

The Upside to Dentures

The great thing about dentures is that they are affordable. People often struggle for years if not decades with tooth loss and teeth that are decayed and failing. Having a set of dentures fitted can completely change the way they look and feel about themselves, not to mention provide them with a more comfortable alternative to eating with teeth that are decayed and loose! Dentures are also fabricated to look just like natural teeth and can manage most foods.

The Downside to Dentures

The biggest problem with removable dentures is that they only replace the crowns of the teeth and not the roots. Your roots play a fundamental role in keeping the jawbone healthy, so without them, the jaw can begin to atrophy and waste away. The changing shape of the jawbone causes dentures that once fitted very snugly to become loose and uncomfortable. This requires patients to come back in to have them refitted and replaced every few years or so.

Dentures also come with a variety of challenges, which includes cleaning after meals, removal at nighttime, discomfort when they cease to fit properly, looseness and the inability to manage certain foods. However, compared to the alternative of unattractive decayed and missing teeth, these daily challenges are certainly far more favorable!
