Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJD or TMJ), are notoriously difficult to diagnose and treat.  Many of the related symptoms, such as headaches and earaches, often lead doctors to diagnose a sinus condition, as opposed to a problem with the jaw joint.  TMJ symptoms often change in severity, depending on how much stress the sufferer is experiencing.  During an intensely stressful period, grinding teeth, debilitating earaches, and lockjaw may occur. Xeomin injections are sometimes an effective and painless way to alleviate tension in the temporomandibular joint, reducing jaw pain, headaches, and suffering. Xeomin is a newer drug similar to Botox but with added benefits.

Xeomin is commonly associated with cosmetic practices, including eliminating glabellar lines and facial wrinkles.  Recently however, Xeomin has become an increasingly popular TMJ treatment.  Although some TMJ symptoms may improve without any specific treatment, Xeomin offers fast and long-lasting relief for those that do not.

Here are the major benefits Xeomin offers TMJ sufferers:tmj tmd xeomin treatment

•    Elimination of headaches caused by nighttime grinding.
•    Minimization of lockjaw.
•    Reduced discomfort when using the jaw.
•    Reduced shoulder and neck pain.
•    Substantially reduced jaw tension.

How does Xeomin work?

The temporomandibular joint is located on both sides of the head where the skull adjoins the jawbone.  This joint is constantly being used for a variety of daily activities, such as chewing, biting, speaking, and swallowing.  The most prominent causes of TMJ are jaw displacement and stress-related involuntary jaw movements.  Xeomin expediently alleviates temporomandibular tension by relaxing the jaw muscles, thus preventing unconscious jaw movement and ending grinding-related headaches.

One of the major advantages of Xeomin is that normal functions such as speaking, swallowing, and biting are left unaffected.  The only major change is the reduction in pain and discomfort.  In addition, controlling TMJ can also prevent serious dental problems from occurring later. TMJ, if left untreated, can contribute to tooth decay, gum disease, and the loosening of teeth.

What’s involved when getting Xeomin injections?

Prior to administering Xeomin injections, the dentist needs to check the patient’s suitability for treatment.  When used in conjunction with certain medications and substances, Xeomin may not produce the desired results.  It is exceptionally important therefore, to be honest about prior medical history.  Xeomin is not recommended for pregnant or lactating women.

The Xeomin injections take 10-20 minutes to administer, depending on the amount required.  Because it is non-surgical, the Xeomin procedure will be performed at the dental office.  Driving ability will not be impaired by the treatment, so there is no need for a designated driver.  The injections are no more painful than a bug bite or pinprick, but nitrous oxide (laughing gas) can be used to reduce anxiety if necessary.

Normal activity can be resumed immediately after the Xeomin treatment, but strenuous activity should be avoided for 24 hours after treatment.  It may take several days (up to 2 weeks) to feel the full benefits of the treatment, but Xeomin will continue to work for up to 3 months.

If you have any questions or concerns about TMJ or Xeomin treatment, please contact our office.

root canals

Root canal or endodontic therapy involves the elimination of infection and decay from the interior of the tooth: in the root canals and in its central pulp chamber, where all the nerves, blood vessels and connective tissues are housed. Infection is typically caused when bacteria find a route into the heart of the tooth, either by decay of the protective enamel covering the dentin of the tooth or by physical trauma leading to a crack, chip or fracture.

Either way, since the inside of a tooth is encased by a hard protective shell, the chances of it healing on its own are exceptionally slim and so our doctors will recommend prompt treatment.

Root Canal Therapy: What Does it Involve?

During treatment, our expert dentists will administer a local anesthetic. This is to ensure that you are completely comfortable throughout the procedure. If you are particularly nervous about dental treatment, we do offer sedation dentistry to keep you comfortable and totally anxiety-free. Once you are comfortable, our doctor will access the infected interior of the tooth.

Very delicate dental instruments are used to remove the infected tissue from the tooth and then very carefully clean the pulp chamber and root canals. An anti-bacterial salve may be applied to the tooth before it is filled with an inert cement-like compound. Once the doctor is happy that the tooth has been properly cleaned of infection, he will repair the drill hole by capping it with a strong and durable ceramic crown. This will restore both the function and give a beautiful cosmetic appearance to the tooth.

After your Procedure

Root canal therapy has a bit of a reputation for being very painful, however, if you take the analgesic medication prescribed to you by our dentist, there is no reason you will need to endure any discomfort. The tooth will be sensitive for a few days afterwards and it is recommended that you stick to a diet of softer foods. Once your tooth has healed, you will be able to resume your normal diet and the tooth will continue to function as if nothing happened to it in the first place!

Why is Root Canal Therapy Necessary?

In spite of the incredible advancements that have been made in modern dentistry, there just isn’t fancy gadgetry that can rival the benefits and longevity of your own biological technology. For this reason, our doctors will always try to save your natural teeth before simply extracting and replacing them. A root canal therapy can literally save a tooth that would otherwise succumb to decay and infection. It should also be mentioned that an infected pulp chamber or root is exceptionally painful and endodontic therapy provides the relief you want most!

Mouth & Bite Guards

mouth bite guards

Dental bite guards provide our patients with an effective way to prevent trauma and advanced wear to their teeth as a result of contact injury during sports, Bruxism (teeth grinding), malocclusions (bad bites) or temporomandibular joint (TMJ and TMD) disorders. All of these factors can cause your teeth to become damaged or to sustain premature wear-and-tear, potentially leading to graver and more expensive consequences further down the line.

You Should Have a Dental Bite Guard Fitted If…

  • You struggle with TMD, pain in your jaw joints, or popping and clicking in your TMJ – a TMJ bite guard will help to alleviate the stress this puts on the teeth and jaw, thus protecting them against long-term damage.
  • You have a mal-occluding bite or poorly orientated teeth. If you aren’t already undergoing orthodontic treatment for these, a dental bite guard could help protect your teeth against the uneven wear-and-tear they tend to cause.

Play Sports?

You should have a bite guard if you play any contact sports (for example, football, basketball and hockey) or there is a risk of you receiving physical trauma to the face. At Prestige Dental we want youcustom mouthguard to support you in your athletic endeavors while also protecting your smile. Unlike the boil and bite mouth guards you buy at the store, ours are custom hand made guards for you or your child’s mouth providing maximum protection. Schedule an appointment today!

Bite Guards and Mouth Guards: How Do I Get One Fitted?

Very simply! The next time you come in for a check-up, ask your dentist whether they would recommend that you wear a bite guard. If they do, they will take an impression of your teeth and send it our onsite dental laboratory to have one made for you. This typically doesn’t take more than a day or two, so you should be able to return to our offices shortly and collect your new bite guard. Be sure to explain the reasons you wish to have a bite guard fitted. Those fabricated for sports obviously need to be bulkier and more protective than those made for nighttime teeth grinding.

Wisdom Teeth

wisdom tooth extractionWisdom teeth are your third set of molars and they typically erupt from the jawbone in your early twenties. Wisdom teeth sit very far back in the mouth and many times people don’t have room in their mouth for them to fit correctly. This is why wisdom teeth typically cause problems when they emerge.

Some people are born without wisdom teeth. A simple X-ray will reveal whether you have wisdom teeth or not and whether they can be expected to cause problems for the neighboring teeth. If this is the case, extraction may be recommended.

The complexity of the procedure involved in wisdom teeth extraction depends on the degree to which the molars have been “impacted” or trapped underneath the second molars. Wisdom teeth orientation and alignment will need to be determined beforehand. A straightforward extraction can be done using a local anesthetic, but more complex cases may require surgery and sedation. In both cases, the utmost care will be taken to ensure that you are kept completely pain and discomfort-free.

What If I Just Ignore Problematic Wisdom Teeth?

You might try, but you’re not likely to get very far! Impacted wisdom teeth can be exceptionally painful and can lead to the formation of abscesses: pockets of wisdom tooth infectioninfection in the soft tissue surrounding the teeth. They can also cause terrible problems for the neighboring teeth and over-crowding of the dental arch. It is far easier to remove wisdom teeth than to endure the resultant problems.

At Prestige Dental Centers, our tooth colored fillings offer our patients an excellent restorative and preventative solution for flaws, cracks and cavities in their tooth structure. We can use them for cosmetic purposes as well. By eliminating any existing infection or decay and filling it in with a durable and aesthetic composite material, further decay can be prevented and dental health restored.

Tooth Colored Fillings: What Causes Cavities?

Cavities are tiny holes in your teeth that have been formed by bacteria. Bacteria feast upon the food debris that is left behind in your mouth after a meal – this is why a thorough home oral hygiene routine is so important! The wastes produced by bacteria are very acidic. If left to sit on your teeth for long periods of time, this waste erodes away at your dental enamel forming cavities.

The cavities themselves then provide excellent refuge for bacteria and are subsequently allowed to get progressively deeper until – if left without treatment – they can the nerve of your tooth. At this juncture, Root Canal Therapy might be necessary. If that measure fails to eliminate infection, you may require tooth extraction and replacement with a Dental Bridge or Dental Implant.

What would have been so much easier and much less costly and painful, would be to have had a filling placed at the outset of the problem.

About Tooth Colored or Composite Fillings

Tooth colored fillings are fabricated from a composite material consisting of resins, plastics and glass-like particles. This specific mixture yields a restorative material that not only looks like dental enamel, but also is very strong and durable. Tooth colored fillings are also free from poisonous metals, like Mercury, and are biocompatible. Once these fillings have been bonded to the tooth, they should last many years without the need for restoration.

Tooth Colored Fillings: The Procedure

The procedure required to place tooth colored or composite fillings is very straightforward and can typically be done in a single dental appointment. We will remove the portion of the tooth that has become decayed and then apply the filling material to the tooth in layers. We will then make use of a special dental light to harden the composite material in place before shaping and polishing it to fit beautifully into your bite.

The Benefits:

  • Tooth colored fillings look extremely natural, unlike traditional materials such as gold and amalgam or silver fillings.
  • They bond very strong to the tooth structure and help to support and prevent further decay.
  • These fillings help to insulate the tooth, preventing you from experiencing extreme temperature sensitivity.

Laser Gum Therapy

laser gum therapy1Gum disease is essentially an advanced and long term bacterial infection of the soft tissues surrounding the teeth. Over time and with habits such as smoking and poor oral hygiene, bacteria migrate deep down into the gums around the teeth, forming pockets of decay and infection. This causes the gums to pull away from the roots of the teeth and, without treatment, can lead to tooth loss. Laser treatment for gum disease is an excellent method for eliminating diseased tissue and halting the progression of infection, especially if used in conjunction with Scaling and Root Planing (SRP).

About Laser Treatment for Gum Disease

By using the safe and powerful capabilities of our lasers we can help your gum disease heal faster than ever before.  The lasers we use are tough on the bad bacteria in your mouth and gentle on your body.  Healing is greatly improved when we use lasers as it creates a clean, almost sterile environment for your gums to quickly heal. Lasers have an added benefit of reducing trauma during your therapy unlike other cleaning methods. Less trauma and irritation to your gums means less swelling bleeding and discomfort.  Infact our patients love the gentle nature of our cleanings here at Prestige Dental Centers.

Additionally, unlike antibiotic medication, which can be prescribed as an adjunct to deep cleanings, there are no bacteria that are resistant to laser treatment. It is also impossible for these nasty pathogens to develop a resistance to laser and it won’t suppress your immune system as antibiotics can. The laser kills all your bacteria without discrimination, which is exactly what you want if your gums are diseased and infected!
