Plenty of people have heard of dental implants, but perceptions can vary greatly. Some think they’re incredibly painful, while others think they won’t stay in long enough to be worth getting.
In reality, implant-supported dentures are a reliable, long-lasting option for people of all ages. They are anchored securely to the bone and come with attachments that are easy to remove and clean.
“They’ve become so prevalent that usually patients are coming in because they’re excited for the benefits of them, rather than worried about the downsides,” says Dr. Sterling Rogers of Prestige Dental Centers. He and Dr. Michael Bull have restored thousands of smiles at their practice, which has locations in Colorado Springs and Pueblo.
Here are four myths – and truths! – about implant dentures.
- Myth: Dental Implants Are Extremely Painful
Truth: They're actually less painful than most dental procedures such as root canals or extractions, Dr. Rogers explains.
“The surgeries are very comfortable for patients,” Dr. Bull adds. “They don’t have very much post-operative discomfort at all.”
In fact, implant dentures are also known as “same day dentures” or “one day dentures” because after a consultation with the doctors, they can be placed in just one surgical visit.
- Myth: Dental Implants Won’t Last Long Enough to Be Worth It
Truth: They’re built to last a lifetime – with regular flossing and proper dental hygiene.
“Sometimes patients come in thinking, ‘Well, fillings come out, so how long is THIS going to last?’ But they’re designed as a long-term solution,” Dr. Bull says.
- Myth: I’m Too Old for Dental Implants
Truth: There is no age limit on dental implants, Dr. Rogers says. The doctors have successfully implanted permanent posts for dentures in patients in their 70s, 80s and even 90s. When these patients finally get their implants, many of them say, "Why didn't I do this 20 years ago? Why was I wearing regular dentures all this time and not enjoying food?"
- Myth: They’re Too Expensive
Truth: “Patients often think they’re way, way, way more expensive than they are,” Dr. Bull says. “They’re not the cheapest thing on planet, but they’re not as expensive as patients think they’re going to be.”
Dental implants are a lifelong investment that will help you enjoy food and feel more confident. They avert the need for denture or bridge replacements every few years.
“They’re very affordable, predictable and safe,” Dr. Rogers says. “They’re much stronger than natural teeth. We joke around that they’re bionic teeth.”
